บังกะโล

Explanation

This is a loanword from English “bungalow.” It can describe a single-story home, but in Thailand it is especially common in travel contexts for a detached guest unit at a beach, island, mountain retreat, or resort. The central image is a separate building rather than a room inside a larger hotel building. The classifier for buildings is หลัง, as in บังกะโลหนึ่งหลัง, “one bungalow.”

Usage

It is commonly used when searching for or booking accommodation and when describing resort facilities. Frequent combinations include พักบังกะโล “stay in a bungalow,” เช่าบังกะโล “rent a bungalow,” and บังกะโลริมทะเล “a bungalow by the sea.”

Caution

บังกะโล normally refers to an individual building, not the entire property or business. A รีสอร์ต “resort” may contain several บังกะโล units. The word also does not necessarily imply cheap or basic accommodation; a bungalow can be luxurious.
