Explanation
ท้วม is used mainly for a person whose body is somewhat rounded and heavier than average, but not extremely so. It is generally milder and more neutral than อ้วน. It can follow a noun, as in ผู้หญิงท้วม “a plump woman,” or appear in combinations such as ตัวท้วม “having a chubby build” and รูปร่างท้วม “a plump physique.” ท้วมขึ้น describes becoming plumper than before.
Usage
It is commonly used when describing someone’s appearance or build, such as in a personal description, a photograph, or identifying someone at a meeting place. It works best as a relatively neutral description of physique.
Caution
Because it comments on body size, it may still feel impolite when said directly to someone, even though it is milder than อ้วน. Do not confuse ท้วม “plump” with ท่วม “to overflow or flood,” as in น้ำท่วม “flooding.”
