Learning notes
Explanation
อ้วน can follow a noun to describe it, as in คนอ้วน, “an overweight person,” or function directly as the predicate, as in เขาอ้วน, “He/She is overweight.” เป็น is not normally inserted before it in this use. อ้วนขึ้น commonly expresses becoming fatter, while ทำให้อ้วน means to make someone fat or cause weight gain. Its basic opposite is ผอม, “thin.” The word is also commonly used for animals.
Usage
Common in everyday conversations about someone’s or a pet’s body shape, weight changes, diet, exercise, and weight management. It can occasionally be used as an affectionate nickname among people who are very close, but whether it sounds affectionate depends heavily on the relationship.
Caution
When applied to a person, อ้วน is direct and can sound insulting or hurtful, especially when said to that person. It does not mean that food is greasy; มัน is used for greasy or fatty food. Use ทำให้อ้วน to say that a food can cause weight gain.
