Explanation

This compound verb consists of ถอด, “to remove,” and ยศ, “rank.” Its underlying image is that an officially conferred rank is being taken away. It normally describes an action by a government, institution, or other authorized body, rather than someone voluntarily giving up a title. The expression has a serious, official tone and is more common in news reports, formal announcements, and historical accounts than in everyday conversation. When the person receiving the punishment is the subject, it commonly appears with ถูก, as in เขาถูกถอดยศ, “He was stripped of his rank.” การถอดยศ is the corresponding noun phrase, meaning “the stripping of a rank.”

Usage

Caution

Do not normally use this for removing an employee from an ordinary corporate position; ปลดออกจากตำแหน่ง is more appropriate. Also distinguish it from ลดชั้นยศ, which means demotion to a lower rank rather than complete loss of rank.
