  1. 1 hang up the phone、put down the receiver

Describes ending a phone call by putting down the receiver, with a particularly strong association with landline phones.

Learning notes

Explanation

This expression combines วาง, “to put down,” with หู, “ear” or the earpiece of a telephone receiver. Its original image is physically returning a landline receiver to its cradle, which ends the call. By itself, it can neutrally describe ending a call. In the pattern วางหูใส่ + person, however, it usually means hanging up on someone and often conveys annoyance or criticism.

Usage

Used when someone ends a telephone conversation or asks the other person not to hang up yet. It is especially natural when referring to a landline receiver.

Caution

For ending calls in general, including mobile calls, วางสาย is more common in contemporary Thai. Also note that วางหูใส่ + person usually implies rudely or abruptly hanging up on that person, not merely ending the call.

Differences from similar words

1 hang up the phone synonyms

  • ตัดสาย suggests deliberately or abruptly cutting off a call and can sound one-sided. วางหู can simply describe the neutral act of ending a call.

  • วางสาย is the more general expression for ending a call and works naturally with both landlines and mobile phones. วางหู more strongly evokes putting down a physical receiver.
