Explanation

ตีห้า is formed from ตี plus ห้า (“five”). Here, ตี is not being used in its ordinary sense of “hit” or “strike”; it is part of a fixed system for naming the hours after midnight and before dawn. The hours from 1:00 to 5:00 a.m. are commonly expressed as ตีหนึ่ง, ตีสอง, ตีสาม, ตีสี่, and ตีห้า. ตีห้าครึ่ง means 5:30 a.m. It can follow ตอน, as in ตอนตีห้า (“at 5 a.m.”), but everyday speech also commonly places the time directly after a verb or clause without ตอน.

Usage

Used in everyday conversation when discussing events scheduled for 5 a.m., such as waking up, leaving home, meeting someone, or starting work. It can also state the current time, as in ตอนนี้ตีห้าแล้ว (“It’s already 5 a.m.”).

Caution

Do not use it for 5 p.m.; that is ห้าโมงเย็น. Also, 6 a.m. is normally หกโมงเช้า, not ตีหก.
