Explanation

ห้าโมงเย็น consists of ห้า “five,” โมง, which is used in daytime clock expressions, and เย็น “evening.” Together, it refers specifically to 5 p.m., or 17:00. In conversation, it can follow a verb directly, as in เจอกันห้าโมงเย็น, “Let’s meet at 5 p.m.” It can also follow words such as ตอน to mark the time explicitly, ตั้งแต่ for “from,” and ประมาณ for “around.” In schedules and official writing, the same time may be written as 17.00 น.

Usage

It is commonly used when discussing meeting times, finishing work, store hours, appointments, classes, and events scheduled for 5 p.m.

Caution

ห้าโมงเย็น always means 5 p.m. For 5 a.m., use ตีห้า. Thai conversational clock expressions change with the time of day, so โมงเย็น cannot simply be attached to every evening hour.
