Explanation
The core idea of ตั้งแต่ is “starting at this point and continuing onward.” It can precede a time expression, as in ตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้ว (“since last year”), or an event, as in ตั้งแต่เรียนจบ (“since graduating”). To state both endpoints, use patterns such as ตั้งแต่ A ถึง B or ตั้งแต่ A จนถึง B, meaning “from A to B.” The range may involve time, location, numbers, or order. ตั้งแต่ can also introduce a full clause. Whether it is followed by a noun phrase or a clause, the basic idea remains the same: it marks the beginning of a continuing span.
Usage
Commonly used to say when an ongoing situation, activity, or habit began, such as living somewhere, working, or studying. It is also used for business hours, event periods, travel ranges, and numerical ranges in “from A to B” expressions.
Caution
Use หลังจาก rather than ตั้งแต่ when you only mean that one event happened after another, with no continuing span implied. Also, ตั้งแต่ does not automatically mean “up to the present”; the endpoint is determined by context or by words such as ถึง or จนถึง.
