Explanation

หลังจาก is formed from หลัง (“behind; after”) and จาก (“from”), giving it the basic image of starting from a point after a particular time or event. The common pattern is “หลังจาก A, B,” meaning that B occurs after A. A may be a noun, a time expression, or an action such as เลิกงาน (“finish work”). When a full clause with its own subject follows, the pattern “หลังจากที่ + subject + verb” is common. The หลังจาก phrase may appear before or after the main clause. It is neutral and widely used in both conversation and writing.

Usage

Commonly used to describe schedules, past events, instructions, and sequences of actions—for example, going home after class, taking medicine after eating, or starting once someone has arrived.

Caution

When the following clause has an explicit subject, ที่ often makes the structure clearer, as in หลังจากที่เขามาถึง (“after he arrived”). If the subject is shared or understood, ที่ is commonly omitted, as in หลังจากกินข้าว (“after eating”). Unlike หลัง by itself, which can refer to physical position, หลังจาก normally expresses a temporal relationship.

Differences from similar words

1 after synonyms

  • ภายหลัง usually means “later” or “afterward” and points to a later time. หลังจาก normally introduces the event or time that serves as the reference point.

  • หลัง can also mean “after,” especially when placed after an action. หลังจาก more clearly introduces the reference time or event and is widely used before nouns and clauses.
