Explanation
This is the basic, everyday noun for the animal “lion.” สิงโตตัวผู้ means “male lion,” while สิงโตตัวเมีย means “female lion.” The usual classifier for counting individual lions is ตัว: สิงโตหนึ่งตัว means “one lion,” and สิงโตสามตัว means “three lions.” ฝูง is used for a group, as in ฝูงสิงโต, “a pride of lions.”
Usage
It is widely used when discussing lions in zoos, wildlife, nature programs, children’s books, and school lessons. Lions may also be mentioned as symbols of strength or courage.
Caution
For Leo, Thai normally uses กลุ่มดาวสิงโต for the constellation or ราศีสิงห์ for the astrological sign. Also, สิงโตทะเล is the established animal name for a sea lion, not a reference to an ordinary lion living in the sea.
