Learning notes
Explanation
The word combines ลง, “to go down,” with จอด, “to stop or park a vehicle.” It therefore describes more than descent: the vehicle comes down and reaches a landing surface. Common patterns include ลงจอดที่ followed by an airport or location, ลงจอดบน followed by a surface or celestial body, and ลงจอดฉุกเฉิน, “to make an emergency landing.” It is a standard term used mainly for airplanes, helicopters, spacecraft, and similar vehicles.
Usage
Common in airport announcements, travel conversations, aviation news, accident reports, and discussions of space missions. It is also used when talking about landing times or whether weather conditions allow an aircraft to land.
Caution
ลงจอด refers to the aircraft or other vehicle landing. Use ถึงสนามบิน for arriving at the airport and ลงจากเครื่องบิน for a passenger getting off a plane. For stopping or parking a car, จอด is normally used instead.
