Explanation
มกราคม is the noun for January, a month with 31 days. It can stand alone when the context is clear, but it is also commonly used as เดือนมกราคม, with เดือน meaning “month.” In dates, it appears in expressions such as วันที่ 1 มกราคม (“January 1”). To say that something happens in January, ในเดือนมกราคม is a common form. The standard written abbreviation is ม.ค. The shortened form มกรา is also sometimes used in conversation.
Usage
It is widely used for January dates and time references in calendars, news reports, school and government documents, bookings, birthdays, and travel or meeting plans.
Caution
This word names the month of January; it does not mean a duration of “one month.” Use หนึ่งเดือน for that. Thai dates are generally ordered day–month–year, and some Thai documents use the Buddhist Era for the year.
