Explanation
The core image of ใน is being inside a boundary or scope. It works with physical places, as in ในห้อง “in the room,” but it also extends naturally to time periods, fields, groups, situations, and viewpoints, as in ในปีนี้ “this year,” ในภาษาไทย “in Thai,” and ในกรณีนี้ “in this case.” After a noun, it can function like an adjective meaning “inner” or “inside,” as in ด้านใน “the inside” and กางเกงใน “underwear.” A formal royal-style use meaning “of/belonging to” exists, but most learners only need to recognize it in set expressions.
Usage
ใน is extremely common in everyday speech, study, work, news, and explanatory writing. You use it for locations, actions inside places, dates and time frames, deadlines, fields of study or work, groups, and situations.
Caution
Do not use ใน for every English “in” or “by.” For transportation, ในรถเมล์ means “inside the bus,” while “go by bus” is usually ไปโดยรถเมล์ or ขึ้นรถเมล์. For movement into a place, Thai normally uses เข้า or เข้าไปใน, not ใน by itself.
