Learning notes

Explanation

หนึ่งทุ่ม means 7:00 p.m., or 19:00. หนึ่ง means “one,” while ทุ่ม is used in the traditional Thai system for counting nighttime hours. The sequence begins with หนึ่งทุ่ม at 7 p.m., followed by สองทุ่ม at 8 p.m. and สามทุ่ม at 9 p.m. It therefore does not mean 1:00. หนึ่งทุ่มตรง means “exactly 7 p.m.,” หนึ่งทุ่มครึ่ง means “7:30 p.m.,” and ประมาณหนึ่งทุ่ม means “around 7 p.m.”

Usage

It is commonly used in everyday conversation when arranging meetings or reservations, giving movie or program times, stating closing hours, or discussing when someone will return home.

Caution

Do not interpret it as 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. is บ่ายโมง. Also, 6 p.m. is normally หกโมงเย็น, not ศูนย์ทุ่ม. Schedules and formal announcements may use สิบเก้านาฬิกา (“19:00”) instead.
