Learning notes

Explanation

This expression combines หัว (“head”) with ล้าน (“bald” or “hairless”). Here, ล้าน does not mean “one million.” As a Thai stative adjective, it can serve directly as the predicate in เขาหัวล้าน (“He is bald”) or follow a noun to describe it, as in ผู้ชายหัวล้าน (“a bald man”). It can describe complete baldness as well as clearly visible hair loss on part of the scalp.

Usage

Used when describing a person's appearance or discussing hair loss and aging. It also appears in stories, news reports, and other contexts where a person’s physical features need to be identified.

Caution

Because it directly labels a physical feature, saying it to or about someone can sound insensitive or mocking. Forms of address such as ไอ้หัวล้าน are insulting. For mild thinning, ผมบาง is the gentler and more accurate expression.
