Learning notes

Explanation

This is the standard Thai name for the second month of the year. It is often used as เดือนกุมภาพันธ์, with เดือน meaning “month,” but กุมภาพันธ์ can stand alone when the context clearly indicates a month, such as in dates or calendars. Thai dates commonly place the day before the month, as in วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ (“February 14”). The standard written abbreviation is ก.พ. February normally has 28 days and has 29 days in a leap year.

Usage

It is used when discussing travel plans, events, birthdays, anniversaries, and other dates. It also commonly appears in calendars, news reports, schedules, and official documents.

Caution

กุมภาพันธ์ means the calendar month “February,” not a duration of two months. “Two months” is สองเดือน. Also note that Thai documents may give the year in the Buddhist Era, so check which calendar is being used when a year is included.
