Learning notes

Explanation

โกน is a common, neutral verb. It normally appears before the hair or body area being shaved, as in โกนหนวด “shave one’s facial hair” and โกนหัว “shave one’s head.” The latter means removing nearly all the hair, and is also used when discussing monks or ordination.

Usage

It is commonly used when talking about grooming, personal hygiene, shaving facial or body hair, and shaving one’s head. โกนหนวด, “shave one’s facial hair,” is especially common.

Caution

Use ตัดผม for an ordinary haircut or simply cutting hair shorter, and ถอน for pulling hair out by the root. A very rare poetic noun โกน meaning “child” also exists, but learners are unlikely to encounter it in modern everyday Thai.
