Explanation
The core image of ถอน is taking something out of the place, attachment, commitment, or valid state that holds it. Its English translation therefore depends heavily on the object: ถอนฟัน means “extract a tooth,” ถอนเงิน means “withdraw money,” ถอนตัว means “pull out,” and ถอนคำพูด means “take back a statement.” ถอนหายใจ, “to sigh,” is a very common fixed expression and is best learned as a unit. ถอน is standard Thai used in everyday conversation as well as banking, medicine, law, business, and news reporting.
Usage
Common everyday uses include withdrawing cash at an ATM, having a tooth extracted, and pulling weeds. It is also frequent when discussing withdrawal from a competition or project, troop movements, retracted statements or applications, and revoked licenses.
Caution
ถอน is not used for every kind of “taking out.” Use ถอด for taking off clothing or shoes and usually for unplugging something, and ชัก for drawing a weapon. ถอนเงิน refers to withdrawing deposited funds, not simply taking cash out of a pocket. In colloquial Thai, ถอน can also mean having another alcoholic drink to ease a hangover, but this context-dependent use should be kept separate from the core meanings.
