In modern everyday use, เบิก is especially common for expense claims and obtaining supplies from an organization. Its senses involving opening or formally bringing someone forward often occur in established expressions such as เบิกทาง, เบิกตัว, and เบิกความ. It is most useful to learn เบิกความ as the complete legal expression “to testify in court.”
Usage
It is common in workplaces when claiming travel or medical expenses, obtaining equipment from a storeroom, or requesting salary in advance. In news and official documents, it also appears when witnesses, defendants, or prisoners are formally brought before a court. เบิกทาง can describe physically clearing a route or figuratively paving the way for something new.
Caution
For an ordinary ATM withdrawal from your own account, ถอนเงิน or the conversational กดเงิน is usually more natural. เบิก strongly suggests an authorized request to an organization or custodian. It also does not replace เปิด as the general verb for opening a door, lid, or container.
