The core meaning of กว้าง is “wide,” the opposite of แคบ, “narrow.” It describes the physical width of roads, rivers, tables, clothing, and similar things. It can also describe a room or house as spacious. A measurement can follow it directly, as in กว้างสองเมตร, “two meters wide.” When “width” is needed as a regular noun, ความกว้าง is normally used. The meaning also extends to abstract scope, including topics, knowledge, choices, and viewpoints. In expressions such as มองให้กว้าง and คิดให้กว้าง, it functions adverbially and means to look at or think about something from a broad perspective. It is a common, stylistically neutral word used in both conversation and writing.

Common situations include describing the width of a road or river, the space in a room, the dimensions of furniture, or the fit of clothing. กว้าง does not cover every use of “large” or “spacious.” Use ใหญ่ when referring to overall size, and consider มีพื้นที่มาก when the amount of floor or land area is the main point. For “generous,” use ใจกว้าง rather than กว้าง alone. To say “widely known,” a fuller expression such as เป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง is natural.
