Explanation
The central image of ดิน is natural earth. When viewed as material that can be planted in, dug, or shaped, it means “soil” or “earth.” When viewed as the surface where someone sits or something falls, it means “the ground.” Clay is normally treated as a type of earth and expressed as ดินเหนียว rather than as a separate everyday sense of ดิน. The pattern ดิน + type or quality forms words such as ดินร่วน (loam), ดินเหนียว (clay), and ดินทราย (sandy soil). ดิน has no single dedicated classifier; it is measured according to its form, container, or weight, as in ก้อนดิน (a clod of earth), ถุงดิน (a bag of soil), and ดินหนึ่งกิโล (one kilogram of soil).
Usage
It is common in gardening and farming, when discussing soil types, digging, or getting dirty with soil. It is also used in everyday outdoor situations such as sitting on the ground or dropping something onto it. When discussing land as property—its ownership, purchase, or area—ที่ดิน is normally used.
Caution
ดิน normally refers to soil or natural earthen ground, so พื้น is generally used for an indoor floor. The planet Earth is โลก, and land treated as property is ที่ดิน. Also, ดินปืน means “gunpowder” as a complete compound; ดิน alone does not ordinarily mean gunpowder.
