ฝุ่น

Explanation

The central image of ฝุ่น is a mass of light, fine particles that float through the air or settle on surfaces. At home it means dust on floors or furniture; outdoors it can mean road dust or construction dust. It is also very common in discussions of air pollution in Thailand. In news or weather-related contexts, ฝุ่นเยอะ may mean that airborne particulate pollution, including PM2.5, is high rather than merely that a place is dusty. ฝุ่น is normally treated as an uncountable substance. Speakers naturally describe its amount with expressions such as ฝุ่นเยอะ (“a lot of dust”) and ฝุ่นน้อย (“little dust”). Common combinations also include ปัดฝุ่น (“dust off”) and ดูดฝุ่น (“vacuum”).

Usage

It is used when talking about cleaning rooms or furniture, dust getting into the eyes or nose, dust allergies, and dust from roads or construction sites. It also appears frequently in everyday conversation and news reports about air pollution, PM2.5, masks, and air purifiers.

Caution

Do not use ฝุ่น for every kind of powder. Prepared or ground substances such as powdered medicine, sugar, or seasoning are normally called ผง. ฝุ่น centers on dust that becomes airborne or accumulates naturally. Also, ฝุ่นเยอะ can mean “there is a lot of dust” indoors but “particulate pollution is high” in an air-quality context.
