Explanation
โต๊ะ covers both “table” and “desk.” Thai usually does not use separate basic words for these two types of furniture; the purpose can be added after โต๊ะ when needed. For example, โต๊ะอาหาร is a dining table and โต๊ะทำงาน is a work desk. In restaurants, it can refer not only to the furniture but also to a customer table or the party seated there. จองโต๊ะ means “reserve a table,” while ลูกค้าโต๊ะนี้ means “the customers at this table.” ตัว is the standard classifier when a table is counted as a piece of furniture: โต๊ะหนึ่งตัว means “one table.” In restaurant contexts, โต๊ะ itself can serve as the counting unit, as in สิบโต๊ะ, “ten tables,” or โต๊ะละสี่คน, “four people per table.” The word is historically a Chinese loanword, but it is completely ordinary in modern Thai.
Usage
It is extremely common at home, at school, in offices, and in restaurants. Typical uses include บนโต๊ะ “on the table,” โต๊ะทำงาน “desk,” and จองโต๊ะ “reserve a table.”
Caution
Do not assume that Thai must use separate basic words for “desk” and “table”; both are normally โต๊ะ, with an additional word specifying the purpose when necessary. Do not use the human classifier คน to count tables.
