Explanation
สิบ is the ordinary, neutral numeral for ten. When counting objects, Thai usually follows the pattern “noun + number + classifier.” For example, เด็กสิบคน means “ten children,” and หนังสือสิบเล่ม means “ten books.” Units follow the number, as in สิบบาท “ten baht” and สิบปี “ten years.” The numbers 11–19 are formed as สิบเอ็ด, สิบสอง, สิบสาม, and so on. Multiples such as 30 and 40 are สามสิบ and สี่สิบ. For an ordinal meaning, add ที่: ที่สิบ means “tenth.”
Usage
It is used whenever the number ten is involved, including counting people or objects, giving prices, ages, durations, and times, and reading calculations, dates, addresses, or phone numbers.
Caution
Twenty is normally ยี่สิบ, not สองสิบ. In numbers such as 11, 21, and 31, the final one is expressed with เอ็ด rather than หนึ่ง: สิบเอ็ด, ยี่สิบเอ็ด, and สามสิบเอ็ด. Ten itself is simply สิบ, not สิบหนึ่ง. When counting objects, remember to place the appropriate classifier after the number.
