Learning notes

Explanation

สิบหก is formed from สิบ (“ten”) and หก (“six”). In Thai numerals, it is written ๑๖. When counting people or objects, the usual order is noun + สิบหก + classifier. For example, เด็กสิบหกคน means “sixteen children,” and หนังสือสิบหกเล่ม means “sixteen books.” It also appears in ages, as in อายุสิบหกปี (“sixteen years old”); dates, as in วันที่สิบหก (“the sixteenth”); and 24-hour time, as in สิบหกนาฬิกา (“16:00”).

Usage

It is commonly used when counting people or objects and when stating ages, dates, 24-hour times, addresses, and other identifying numbers.

Caution

Do not confuse สิบหก (“16”) with หกสิบ (“60”). To say “sixteenth,” use ที่สิบหก. When counting people or objects, an appropriate classifier normally follows the number.
