Explanation
สิบเอ็ด is formed from สิบ “ten” and เอ็ด, the form of “one” normally used at the end of numbers such as 11, 21, and 31. For this reason, eleven is normally สิบเอ็ด, not สิบหนึ่ง. When counting objects, the usual pattern is “noun + number + classifier,” as in หนังสือสิบเอ็ดเล่ม “eleven books” and นักเรียนสิบเอ็ดคน “eleven students.” To express the ordinal “eleventh,” place ที่ before it: ที่สิบเอ็ด.
Usage
It is used throughout everyday life for quantities and numbers, including numbers of people or objects, ages, prices, times, dates, room numbers, and similar contexts.
Caution
The standalone numeral “one” is หนึ่ง, but the final 1 in eleven is normally เอ็ด. Use ที่สิบเอ็ด when you specifically mean “eleventh.” When reading digits separately, as in a phone number, 11 may instead be read as หนึ่ง หนึ่ง (“one one”).
