Learning notes

Explanation

The Thai numeral symbol corresponding to สี่ is ๔. When counting nouns, the usual pattern is “noun + สี่ + classifier.” For example, หนังสือสี่เล่ม means “four books,” and นักเรียนสี่คน means “four students.” The noun can be omitted when the item is already clear, as in เอาสี่อัน, “I’ll take four.” For the ordinal “fourth,” Thai normally uses ที่สี่.

Usage

It is used when counting people or objects, specifying quantities while shopping, and giving ranks, floors, dates, times, phone numbers, and other numerical information. It is common in both speech and writing.

Caution

Quantities commonly require a classifier, with the usual order “noun + numeral + classifier.” Take care with clock expressions: ตีสี่ means 4 a.m., while สี่โมงเย็น means 4 p.m. The traditional expression สี่โมงเช้า does not mean 4 a.m.; it means 10 a.m.
