Explanation
The central idea of แคบ is having little width, room, or available range. It describes physical narrowness, as in ถนนแคบ (“a narrow road”) and ห้องแคบ (“a small, narrow room”), as well as abstract limitations, such as ขอบเขตแคบ (“a narrow scope”) and มุมมองแคบ (“a narrow viewpoint”). Like Thai adjectives generally, แคบ follows the noun it modifies. Its opposite is กว้าง, meaning “wide” or “broad.”
Usage
It is commonly used for the width or space of roads, alleys, rooms, and entrances. It also describes limited options, markets, scopes of discussion, perspectives, and ways of thinking.
Caution
Do not use แคบ simply to mean “few” or “a small number”; use น้อย for quantities. ใจแคบ is a negative judgment meaning “narrow-minded” or “intolerant,” so saying it directly to someone can be insulting. To emphasize the uncomfortable feeling caused by a confined space, อึดอัด is often more appropriate.
