Learning notes
Explanation
ผู้จัดการ is formed from ผู้, which creates a word meaning “a person who does something,” and จัดการ, meaning “to manage” or “to handle.” Its basic image is therefore “a person who manages.” The area being managed commonly follows the word, as in ผู้จัดการร้าน (store manager), ผู้จัดการสาขา (branch manager), and ผู้จัดการฝ่ายการตลาด (marketing manager). The usual classifier for counting managers is คน. In job titles and other compact writing, the word may be abbreviated as ผจก.
Usage
It is commonly used when introducing someone's position at a company or asking for the person in charge at a store, hotel, or bank. It also appears in job listings, business cards, organizational charts, sports, and entertainment management. It is neutral and works naturally in both speech and writing.
Caution
A ผู้จัดการ does not have one fixed level of authority; the position varies by organization. Also, a ผู้จัดการร้าน manages a store but is not necessarily its owner. The owner is เจ้าของร้าน.
