Learning notes
Explanation
The core image is applying force to pull something in a particular direction. Direction words commonly make the result more specific: ดึงออก means to pull out, ดึงเข้า to pull in, ดึงขึ้น to pull up, and ดึงลง to pull down. This physical image extends naturally to abstract uses such as ดึงความสนใจ “draw attention,” ดึงคนเข้ากลุ่ม “bring someone into a group,” ดึงข้อมูล “retrieve data,” and ดึงเวลา “stall for time.”
Usage
It is common in everyday situations involving doors, ropes, clothing, or parts of the body. It is also used for dragging items on a screen and retrieving data from a system. In business and advertising, it describes drawing attention, customers, or talent; in meetings and negotiations, it can describe stalling for time.
Caution
ดึง does not cover every use of English “pull” or “draw.” Expressions such as deducting a price, a fever going down, or withdrawing from an activity require other Thai verbs. ผลัก “push” describes the opposite motion. Do not confuse ดึง with the similar-looking ตึง, which means “tight” or “taut.” Pulling someone's arm or body can sound forceful, so เบาๆ may be added when you mean “gently.”
