Explanation

The central image of ลาก is pulling something along in a particular direction, with the object following behind or remaining in contact with a surface. Its basic uses include dragging furniture, towing a vehicle, and pulling a wheeled suitcase. With a person as the object, it can describe either physically pulling them or, in a lighter and often exaggerated sense, making a reluctant person come along. The idea of continuous movement also appears in ลากเส้น, “draw a line,” and in computer or phone instructions meaning “drag.” In extended uses, ลากเสียง means to draw out a sound, while ลากยาว means to continue for a long time or make something last longer.

Usage

It is common when moving furniture or luggage, towing a broken-down vehicle or boat, or persuading a reluctant friend to go somewhere. It is also used for drawing lines and giving drag-and-drop or touchscreen instructions. Extended expressions describe sounds being held or meetings, cases, and problems continuing for a long time.

Caution

ดึง also means “pull,” but it can be used even when the object does not move. ลาก more strongly suggests that pulling causes the object to travel some distance. Use ถือ for carrying something in the hand and ยก for lifting it. Do not analyze ลาก่อน (“goodbye”) or ลากิจ (“personal leave”) as containing ลาก. In both words, the first element is ลา, a different word.
