Explanation

The word combines ลา, “to take leave,” with กิจ, “business or a matter to attend to.” Its basic image is taking time off in order to handle a personal matter. It is common in formal workplace or school contexts, especially when requesting leave or discussing leave policies. The pattern ขอลากิจ, “to request personal leave,” is especially common.
