Explanation

ชาวประมง is a neutral, gender-inclusive term for someone whose occupation or livelihood is fishing. It consists of ชาว, which identifies members of a place, group, or occupation, and ประมง, meaning “fishing” or “the fishing industry.” Thai nouns do not normally change form for number. ชาวประมงหนึ่งคน means “one fisher,” while ชาวประมงหลายคน means “several fishers.” The classifier for people is คน.

Usage

It is used when stating someone’s occupation and in discussions of ports, fishing villages, seafood markets, the fishing industry, coastal conservation, and accidents at sea. News and official writing also commonly use it collectively for people whose livelihoods depend on fishing.

Caution

ประมง by itself normally refers to fishing as an industry or activity, not to a person. Use ชาวประมง for the worker and เรือประมง for a fishing boat. For a recreational angler, นักตกปลา is more natural.
