Explanation
This is a loanword from English “soup.” It is especially common for Western-style soups. The main ingredient can follow the word, as in ซุปไก่ “chicken soup” and ซุปเห็ด “mushroom soup.” The form น้ำซุป often refers to the broth in noodles or hot pot, or to stock used in cooking. Servings may be counted with ถ้วย for a cup or small bowl and ชาม for a larger bowl, depending on the container.
Usage
It is used at home and in restaurants to name or order soups, and in cooking contexts to talk about broth or stock.
Caution
Thai normally uses กิน “eat” with soup, so กินซุป is more natural in an ordinary meal context than ดื่มซุป “drink soup.” Also, despite its name, ซุปหน่อไม้ is generally an Isan bamboo shoot dish rather than an ordinary bowl of liquid soup.
