Explanation

ร้อน is a neutral, extremely common everyday word. It covers both an object's high temperature and hot weather or surroundings, distinctions for which English generally uses the same word, “hot.” As a Thai descriptive word, it can serve directly as the predicate. กาแฟร้อน can mean “hot coffee” or, depending on context, “the coffee is hot,” while ฉันร้อน means “I feel hot.” Its basic temperature opposite is เย็น. The reduplicated form ร้อนๆ is also common in conversation and emphasizes being in a hot state; for example, กินตอนร้อนๆ means “eat it while it's hot.” Figurative meanings appear especially in compounds, where word order matters. ใจร้อน describes someone impatient or hot-tempered, whereas ร้อนใจ means being so worried that one cannot remain calm.

Usage

It is frequently used to discuss the weather or room temperature, describe hot food and drinks, warn someone about a hot object, or say that you feel hot. It is especially useful when asking for hot water or suggesting that the air conditioner be turned on. It also appears in common compounds about worry, impatience, urgent matters, news, and controversial public issues.

Caution

ร้อน refers primarily to temperature. For spicy food, especially chili heat, use เผ็ด; อาหารร้อน normally means hot food, not spicy food. For something pleasantly warm or lukewarm, use อุ่น. Thus น้ำอุ่น is warm or lukewarm water, while น้ำร้อน is hot water. Also take care with word order: ใจร้อน means impatient or hot-tempered, while ร้อนใจ means worried and unable to relax.
