Explanation

When giving a reason, the basic pattern is “result + เพราะ + reason.” If the reason comes first, เพราะ A เลย B is very common in conversation. เพราะ A จึง B expresses the same cause-and-effect relationship in more formal or written language. เพราะว่า has essentially the same meaning. A short answer to a ทำไม (“why”) question can consist simply of เพราะ followed by the reason. As an adjective, เพราะ commonly occurs with เพลง (song), เสียง (voice or sound), and ทำนอง (melody). It emphasizes that something sounds beautiful or pleasing, rather than merely being performed with technical skill.

Usage

It is widely used in both conversation and writing to explain reasons for absences, delays, decisions, feelings, and events. It is also common when complimenting a song, voice, melody, or other pleasant sound.

Caution

เพราะ introduces a reason; it does not normally introduce only the result in the way “so” does. Use เพราะฉะนั้น, ดังนั้น, or ก็เลย for that function. Do not confuse it with เพาะ, a differently spelled word meaning “to cultivate, breed, or germinate.”
