Learning notes
Explanation
ยังไม่ combines ยัง, which conveys continuation up to a point in time, with the negator ไม่. The usual pattern is “subject + ยังไม่ + predicate.” It does more than simply negate the predicate: it presents an expected action, change, or state as unrealized up to the relevant time. This often suggests that the situation may change later. In conversation, the predicate can be omitted and ยังไม่ can stand alone when its meaning is clear from the question.
Usage
Common when asking about or describing progress and results, such as eating, arriving, doing homework, finishing work, or getting ready. It is natural in both everyday conversation and ordinary writing.
Caution
The normal order is ยังไม่ + predicate, not ไม่ยัง. For a general habit or an intention not to do something, use ไม่ rather than ยังไม่.
