Explanation
มือใหม่ combines มือ (“hand,” also associated with skill or a person who performs an activity) and ใหม่ (“new”). As a whole, it means a person who is new to a field, not literally a “new hand.” It can function as a noun in เป็นมือใหม่ (“be a beginner”), follow a person or role as a modifier in ช่างภาพมือใหม่ (“beginner photographer”), or serve as a predicate in เขายังมือใหม่อยู่ (“he is still inexperienced”). It is a common, generally neutral expression and can naturally be used to describe yourself. มือเก่า contrasts with it by referring to an experienced or long-standing participant, while มืออาชีพ emphasizes professional status or expertise.
Usage
It is widely used for people beginning a hobby, sport, game, job, driving, investing, photography, cooking, or another activity. In courses and instructional materials, common phrases include สำหรับมือใหม่ (“for beginners”) and คู่มือสำหรับมือใหม่ (“a beginner's guide”).
Caution
มือใหม่ describes limited experience in a particular activity; it does not simply mean that someone has newly joined an organization. พนักงานใหม่ is usually clearer for “new employee.” When applied to someone else, มือใหม่ can sometimes sound like a comment on their lack of skill, depending on the context.
