Explanation
พริก is the general, everyday Thai word for chili peppers and is extremely common in discussions of Thai food. It can refer to fresh, dried, chopped, or otherwise prepared chilies. Their form can be specified with expressions such as พริกสด “fresh chili,” พริกแห้ง “dried chili,” and พริกป่น “ground chili.” Individual chilies are commonly counted with เม็ด. For example, พริกสองเม็ด means “two chilies.” When specifically referring to the plant, Thai commonly uses ต้นพริก, with ต้น also serving as its classifier.
Usage
It is commonly used when ordering food and adjusting the heat level, discussing ingredients or recipes, and buying chilies at a market. Useful ordering phrases include ใส่พริก “add chili” and ไม่ใส่พริก “do not add chili.”
Caution
พริก normally means “chili pepper,” not black or white pepper; those are called พริกไทย. Also, asking for ไม่ใส่พริก may not remove chili already contained in a premade paste or sauce. If you cannot tolerate spicy food, saying กินเผ็ดไม่ได้ (“I can't eat spicy food”) is clearer.
