Explanation

อาบน้ำ is formed from อาบ, “to bathe or expose the body to a liquid,” and น้ำ, “water.” Its basic image is washing the body with water. In Thailand, bathing usually involves a shower, so อาบน้ำ often corresponds to “take a shower” in everyday conversation. The expression itself is broader, however, and can also refer to bathing in a tub or washing oneself with water. Use อาบน้ำ for bathing yourself. The pattern อาบน้ำให้ + person is commonly used when bathing someone else, such as a child.

Usage

It is extremely common when talking about daily routines, such as showering after waking up, before going out, after exercise, or before bed. It is also used when telling someone to bathe or when washing a child or pet.

Caution

อาบน้ำ refers to washing the body as a whole. Use ล้างมือ for washing your hands and ล้างหน้า for washing your face. It does not normally mean “swim” or “play in the water”; those are ว่ายน้ำ and เล่นน้ำ, respectively.
