Learning notes
Explanation
The word is formed from ลูก (“child”) and สาว (“young woman/female”). As a whole, however, it simply means “daughter” and is not limited to young daughters. The parent or possessor can be stated with ของ, as in ลูกสาวของฉัน (“my daughter”). In conversation, ของ is often omitted, giving forms such as ลูกสาวฉัน or ลูกสาวคุณ. Daughters are counted with the human classifier คน: ลูกสาวสองคน means “two daughters.” Birth order can be expressed with ลูกสาวคนโต (“eldest daughter”), ลูกสาวคนกลาง (“middle daughter”), and ลูกสาวคนเล็ก (“youngest daughter”).
Usage
It is commonly used when describing a family or talking about a daughter’s age, education, work, or daily life. It is also natural when asking someone about their daughter.
Caution
เด็กผู้หญิง means “girl” without implying a family relationship, whereas ลูกสาว always identifies someone as a daughter. Despite containing สาว, the word can refer to an adult daughter.
