Explanation
ราช is a formal word of Sanskrit and Pali origin whose central idea is “king” or “royal authority.” In modern Thai, it is rarely used by itself to mean “king.” It is more useful to learn it as part of fixed compounds such as ราชวงศ์ “dynasty; royal family,” ราชสำนัก “royal court,” and ราชโองการ “royal command.” The expanded form พระราช- also appears in many royal terms, such as พระราชวัง “royal palace.” In words such as ราชการ “government service” and ข้าราชการ “civil servant,” the older connection with royal administration has developed into the modern sense of state or government service.
Usage
It is common in discussions of royalty, dynasties, history, court life, ceremonies, and formal news reporting. Through compounds such as ราชการ, it also appears in everyday contexts involving government offices and public administration.
Caution
ราช is not a freely productive adjective that can be attached to any noun as an equivalent of “royal.” Learn the established compounds individually. Also, ราชการ normally refers to government or official service, not the king’s personal work.
