Explanation
วัง is a noun for a palace or residence belonging to a king or another member of a royal family. It may refer either to the main building or to the larger palace complex. It can be used alone, but พระราชวัง is especially common when referring explicitly to a royal palace. Depending on context, วัง may also evoke the royal household or life within the palace, much as “the palace” can in English. When counted as a place or institution, แห่ง can be used; when treated as a building, หลัง is possible.
Usage
The word commonly appears in discussions of the Thai monarchy and historical royalty, descriptions of architecture and culture, and conversations about visiting palaces. It is also frequently found in the names of royal residences.
Caution
Do not normally use วัง for an impressive private home merely because it is large or luxurious. A non-royal mansion is usually called คฤหาสน์.
