The core image of ห้อย is something supported at its top or at one point while the rest extends downward under gravity. Thai uses this verb both for a state, as in สายไฟห้อย (“a wire is hanging”), and for an action, as in ห้อยป้ายชื่อ (“hang or wear a name tag”). It is also common with body parts: ห้อยขา means to let one’s legs dangle, while หูห้อย describes drooping ears. ห้อยลงมา emphasizes downward extension, ห้อยอยู่ emphasizes the continuing hanging state, and ห้อยไว้ indicates that something has been hung and left in place.
Usage
