  1. 1 cow; bovine

An everyday word for cattle, regardless of whether the animal is male or female.

Learning notes

Explanation

วัว is the everyday Thai word for cattle and does not by itself indicate whether the animal is male or female. Use วัวตัวผู้ for a male and วัวตัวเมีย for a female when that distinction matters. Cattle are counted with the general animal classifier ตัว, as in วัวหนึ่งตัว, “one cow.” When referring to the meat, Thai normally uses เนื้อวัว, meaning “beef.”

Usage

This basic word is common in conversations about farms, livestock, and animals. It also appears frequently in food-related expressions such as เนื้อวัว “beef” and นมวัว “cow's milk.”

Caution

วัว does not mean only a female cow. A water buffalo is ควาย, not วัว. Also, use เนื้อวัว for “beef”; วัว alone normally refers to the animal.
