Refers to an unspecified recent day in the past, much like “the other day.”

Learning notes

Explanation

วันก่อน combines วัน (“day”) with ก่อน (“before”) and refers to an unspecified day in the relatively recent past. It does not indicate a fixed number of days ago. It is often placed near the beginning of a sentence, and เมื่อวันก่อน is another common form with essentially the same meaning. Although it is sometimes glossed as “the previous day,” standalone วันก่อน usually means “the other day,” not necessarily exactly one day earlier.

Usage

It is common in everyday conversation when mentioning someone you recently met, somewhere you went, or something that happened without specifying the exact date.

Caution

Use เมื่อวาน for “yesterday” and เมื่อวานซืน for “the day before yesterday.” วันก่อน is too vague when an exact date matters, such as for appointments or deadlines.
