Explanation

The central idea of สมมุติ is establishing a premise or object that may not be real so that it can be considered or discussed. The very common pattern สมมุติว่า + clause introduces a hypothetical situation, much like “suppose that...” or “let's say....” After a noun, it can mean “hypothetical” or “fictitious,” as in ชื่อสมมุติ, “a fictitious name.” สมมติ is another common spelling of the same word and is often preferred in dictionaries and edited writing, while สมมุติ is also widely encountered. Rare nominal meanings such as “convention” or “agreement” are not included here because they are not useful as ordinary modern senses for most learners.

Usage

It is common in hypothetical questions, classroom examples, thought experiments, and discussions of possible scenarios. It is also used in news reports or case studies for fictitious names and in descriptions of invented people or events.

Caution

สมมุติว่า explicitly sets up a scenario for consideration, whereas ถ้า is the more general “if.” For freely imagining a scene or story, จินตนาการ is usually more appropriate. In formal writing, follow the chosen style guide and use either สมมติ or สมมุติ consistently.
