Explanation
The term combines ศาสนา (“religion”) with อิสลาม (“Islam”). It is common in conversation, education, and news reporting. A useful expression is นับถือศาสนาอิสลาม, meaning “practice Islam” or “follow Islam.” Although นับถือ can mean “respect,” with a religion as its object it describes religious affiliation or belief.
Usage
Use it to describe someone's religious affiliation or discuss religion, culture, Islamic teachings, and observances. It also appears frequently in descriptions of communities in southern Thailand.
Caution
Distinguish the religion from its followers: a Muslim is มุสลิม or ชาวมุสลิม. Say เขาเป็นมุสลิม (“He is Muslim”), not เขาเป็นศาสนาอิสลาม. The standard English translation of the religion is “Islam”; “Mohammedanism” is outdated, and “Islamism” usually refers to political ideologies.
