Explanation

เกิน means “exceed,” and จริง refers to truth or reality. Together, they convey going beyond what is actually the case, such as overstating the scale of an event or the benefits of a product. The expression can follow a verb, as in พูดเกินจริง, “to exaggerate,” or describe a claim or portrayal directly. In films, it can describe exaggerated action that feels unrealistic. It is used in both everyday conversation and writing. It often expresses criticism, but it can also be used modestly when someone gives excessive praise.

Usage

Use it when someone embellishes a story, an advertisement overstates a product's benefits, or a movie's action seems exaggerated. ไม่ได้พูดเกินจริงนะ, “I'm not exaggerating,” is also a common way to emphasize that a surprising statement is accurate.

Caution

Do not use it as a general equivalent of “incredible” meaning wonderful or amazing. It also does not simply mean that a plan is impractical or impossible; it points to exaggeration beyond reality.
