Explanation
The word combines ไม้ (“wood” or “woody plant”), ยืน (“stand” or “remain”), and ต้น (“tree” or “plant”). Its literal image is therefore a tree that remains standing for a long time. It is used for long-lived trees such as mango, tamarind, and coconut trees. Individual trees are counted with ต้น; for example, ไม้ยืนต้นสามต้น means “three trees.” Although it can be used in ordinary conversation, it sounds more classificatory than the general word ต้นไม้. It is especially common in gardening, agriculture, land-use descriptions, and environmental discussions.
Usage
It is commonly used when choosing trees for a garden or property, classifying plants, discussing long-term agricultural crops, or describing tree conservation and green spaces.
Caution
It does not mean every kind of perennial plant. Perennial herbs without a persistent tree-like trunk are normally excluded and are classified as ไม้ล้มลุก. It also does not necessarily mean a large tree, so it is not always interchangeable with ไม้ใหญ่.
